How to Fall Back in Love with your Winter Clothes

Style

It happens sometime in January or February for most people who live in where it gets frigid in the winter – you can. not. imagine. wearing. the. same. sweater. one. more. day.  There isn’t one solution for every person, but here are a couple things you could try so soothe your winter wardrobe blues.

Spread out your purchases of Winter Gear

Don’t buy everything you think you want and blow your budget at the beginning of the season. Clothing stores put out new clothes every couple of weeks (if not more frequently) so there will probably be something you want later in the season that you can’t get if you spent all your winter clothes money already.

At the beginning of the season, inventory what you have from last year, and write a list of holes you need to fill and when they should be filled by. For example, if you don’t have a pair of snow pants that fit you and you know you are going skiing in February, I do not suggest buying snow pants in November. There is something to be said for being prepared, but sometimes you should wait to purchase until you have a solid idea of exactly what you want.

Things you should buy at the beginning of the season are basics like tights, socks, gloves, etc. I think having super cute winter basics like makes it more fun to wear them. I like to think I get the opportunity to wear my cute beanie and snow gear to go outside and shovel instead of the dread of going out in the cold and shoveling. It’s still going outside in freezing weather and shoveling, but my perspective changed because I get to wear cute clothes to do it (whatever it takes, right?).

Get out of the House

Plan an outing to wear your super cute winter wear like a day trip skiing or sledding or ice skating –  basically just get out of the house and out of your leggings 100% of the time. If you live in the Midwest like me, winter feels like it’s about 60% of the year and it’s not cool to just resign yourself to being miserable and sad for that much of the year.

Get Inspiration for Outfits

Read other fashion blogs! If I’m Feeling especially blah about my winter clothes, I look at other blogs to see what they’re all doing to get inspired.

A Slice of Style

Start Buying Transitional Pieces

If you feel like a Nun always having your skin covered all winter, this is your year for sweaters. Seriously, skin-showing sweaters are like, EVERYWHERE. Tie up sweaters, off the shoulder, side slits and other cute skin showing sweaters are like everywhere so you’re still warm because of the sweater but still aren’t dressed like a total prude. The best part about these sweaters is they are great for transitioning to spring. When it’s 45 degrees out in March, it feels like a heat wave so you want wear spring clothes, but it’s still too cold for that, so cold-shoulder sweater are perfect. You can still be warm enough, but not overheat. It’s the best of everything.

Keep Summer Out of Side, Out of Mind

Pack away strictly summer clothes so you don’t get sad seeing them in your closet when you can’t wear them. I know it’s not what Marie Kondo says to do, but she doesn’t have to live through Michigan winters. I think this is beneficially for two reasons: 1. You have a closet filled with clothes you can actually wear and 2. When it is time to break out the summer clothes it’s like you’re getting a whole new wardrobe without shopping for one!
